July 1st is the mid-way mark of the year, a beautiful time to refresh, renew, and restore all that is most important in your life. I would love to encourage you to take this opportunity to begin creating your personal rule of life (rhythm of life) that feels truly life-giving to you.
When, where, and how will you spend time with God? What relationships would you like to pour into most, how, and how often? What do you need to do for YOU–that all important self-care that honors how God uniquely created you? When, where, and how are you using the beautiful gifts with which your heavenly Father has gifted you for his kingdom people? What ways do you feel called to spend not only your time, but your financial talent? What is your passion, your deepest desire, that you feel God’s pleasure when you are doing that one thing?
If you desire to truly dig into these questions in a transformative way, I highly recommend Steve Macchia’s excellent book Crafting a Rule of Life. I spent the past year working through it for my Selah program, and it radically impacted me by helping me discern what my true passion and purpose is in life, what lights me up for Jesus! Of course, you can also use the above questions to do a simple version of this process if that feels more your style.
While I am on the topic of recommending books, I absolutely must be sure you know about the Lectio Divina Journal. Man, oh man, am I excited beyond words about this one! The new one started today, July 1, 2016, and goes through the end of the calendar year. So it is definitely not too late to order one. This is the most thorough organization of key prayer practices I have yet seen. It even includes a weekly Examen, suggestions for a family Examen, a monthly Incarnatio (way to live out what you are praying), and of course the daily Lectio passage with spaces to journal each step. I could not have been more excited to begin this today!
Last but not least, I invite you to join me in beginning some Scripture memory for this second half of the year. I have realized it’s been about a year since I memorized a significant chunk of God’s Word, and my soul is hungry for more. So the other day I sensed my Abba inviting me to memorize 2 Corinthians 5-6. Now, I know that is a lot of verses, so please feel the freedom to memorize whatever Jesus lays on your heart. If you would like to join me in 2 Corintians 5-6, I would LOVE to have some company on the journey; or let me know what passage/chapter you feel led to memorize. We can be memory pilgrims together!
I close with this beautiful prayer a dear Selah friend (Owen Lovejoy) shared with all of us interns the other day. You may enjoy beginning your day with it tomorrow.
I awake this morning in the presence
of the holy angels of God.
May heaven open wide before me,
above me, and around me,
that I may see the Christ of my love
and His sunlit company
in all the things of earth this day.
With Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we pray. Amen.
